How to activate data using Permutive
You can activate your first-party data from InfoSum to Permutive.
If you want to activate your first-party data from InfoSum through the Permutive Data Management Platform (DMP) you need to implement a self-service data ingestion process.
You need a Google Cloud Storage (GCS) account and a Google Cloud Storage bucket, which Permutive can provide you with. You can then send the file with your activation segment to the GCS bucket and make it available on the Permutive platform. Let’s see how.
Before you begin
Set up your Google Cloud Storage bucket
In order to use Permutive data imports, you’ll first need access to a Google Cloud Storage bucket for data uploads. Permutive provides a GCS bucket if you don’t have one. Please contact Permutive support to get a bucket with the relevant access. Click here for details of how to contact them and which information you need to share with them.
If you already have done this and you have all the details, please skip this step.
Define the taxonomy and share it with Permutive
Before you can begin uploading data, you must share a segment taxonomy that describes the segment you will be sending in your data import files. Contact Permutive support or click here for more information.
Please note that
- Although Permutive can ingest a single multi-segments file, InfoSum only allows you to export one segment per file. If you upload more than one segment file for a multi-segment campaign, only the last file is associated with the user id in the Permutive platform. For this reason, we recommend that you activate only one segment at a time from InfoSum via Permutive.
- Permutive accepts files without a header row, whereas InfoSum will export a file that includes the header row. For this reason, Permutive’s ingestion process may require you to remove the header row manually before uploading the file to its platform.
Data activation in InfoSum
Create an activation Bunker
To export your audience segment out of InfoSum you’ll need to have an activation Bunker.
If you don’t have one yet, you’ll need to set this up first. See creating a dataset for details.
When you are setting up your activation Bunker, please make sure that you select, as output columns, IDs that the Permutive platform can currently ingest. Permutive requires the ID to be a User ID they already collect in the platform. Contact the Permutive support team to confirm which identifier you should use.
There are two options for activation:
- You build the audience segment and use your activation Bunker, or
- You give permission to a partner to build a segment and use your activation Bunker.
Option one: You build the audience segment and use your activation Bunker
Step 1. Create your activation segment
Using the Segment Builder
For more information on how to create a segment, see how to create a segment.
Once the segment is created, select New Activation from the menu on the top right corner. Choose the dataset you want to use for activation and the output column you want to export.
Define the Output data column label according to what output column you selected. You must use a string that mimics the ID identified by the output column. For example, if you are using a hashed email address, you need to define a value that mimics a hashed email, e.g. a1bc234d56efg7890h12i3lm4no56p78.
Select the Add a column of string values to your output data option to easily build the export file as is requested by the Permutive platform ingestion process.
Add a Column Name - here you must define and use a Segment ID. You can choose the string you prefer as Segment ID (we suggest defining and using a short alphanumeric string, maximum 10 characters. For example 1, 1234, LoyCust12, etc.). It is important to use the same Segment ID contained in the taxonomy shared with the Permutive support team.
Add a Column Value - here you must again use the Segment ID used for the Column Name.
Select Tab as the Column Delimiter and click Submit.
Using the Query Tool
For more information on how activation queries work, see activation query.
To write an activation query, go to the Console Tab of Query Tool. Select Activation as the Query Type and write your activation query.
Select the Add a column of string values to your output data option to easily build the export file as required by the Permutive platform ingestion process.
Select also the Override queried column headers with new headers option (please contact your Customer Success Representative if override queried column headers are not available). Replace Header to override with the title of the output column selected as defined in the dataset, be careful about how you write it. Then replace New Column Header with a string that mimics the ID identified by the output column. For example, if you are using a hashed email address, you need to define a value that mimics a hashed email, e.g. a1bc234d56efg7890h12i3lm4no56p78.
Select Tab as the Column Delimiter, enter the Campaign ID and click on Create Campaign.
Step 2: connect your GCS bucket to your Activation Bunker
Go to the Activation tab under Activate and select the campaign you created for the data activation. At the bottom of the page, you will see a box containing three menu tabs - Details, Export Configuration and Export History. Switch to Export Configuration, use the slider to enable the GCS bucket connector and fill out the form with the details of the GCS bucket you received from Permutive. See the following link for more information about how to push data to a GCS bucket.
Please be attentive to the Destination Filename. Be sure to use a unique name, which includes your company’s name, and do not use spaces.
Click on the Save button, then click on the Activate button to push the data to the final destination selected.

Option two: You give permission to a partner to build a segment and use your activation Bunker
If you want to allow another partner to reference your dataset and to use your activation Bunker for activating data, you need to create an Activation permission. When you create permissions, you define how another party can use your dataset. Click here to learn how InfoSum Permissions work.
Step 1. Create an activation permission
First of all, you need to create an activation permission for your activation bunker that allows your partner to reference your dataset. Click here to learn how to create an activation permission .
Step 2. Share the activation dataset name with the partner
The partner will need to know the name of the activation dataset as they will need to include this information if they build a segment to activate or if they run an activation query.
Step 3. Share the cloud storage credentials with the partner
Please follow your organization's process to share information with a third party.
Step 4. The partner creates the activation segment and pushes it to the GCS Bucket
As described in option one above.
Verify that Permutive is ingesting data correctly
Contact the Permutive support team to verify that the records have been ingested. Once the support team has confirmed this with you, you will need to create a custom cohort with second-party data using the Permutive UI. You will find the segment exported from InfoSum under the second party cohort available. You can reference the Permutive guide here for more information.
