How to import data from Piano to InfoSum
Overview of Piano & InfoSum
The diagram below shows what can be done today.
Overview of the inbound stream: How to upload data from Piano to InfoSum
Overview: How to export data from Piano into InfoSum
To export your data from Piano into InfoSum you must follow these steps.
You need to interact with both platforms. Start by using Piano to define the data you want to export and generating the file to be exported. Then, use InfoSum to create the Bunkers and upload your files
As soon as you finalize the onboarding process, you are ready to start making the most of InfoSum’s data collaboration capabilities.
- Generate the Segments File and the Mapping File exports in Piano
Contact your Piano Account Manager to set up the generation of the two files. - Push the two files to the selected cloud storage
The two files can be pushed to an S3 or SFTP destination. InfoSum offers a connector with both of them. You can choose the preferred cloud location according to the technology you are using or have at your disposal. - Create the two Bunkers in InfoSum and upload the files
Use the InfoSum Bunkers UI to create a Bunkers for each of the files to upload the datasets. Normalize the two datasets, mapping them easily to our Global Schema. - Start data collaboration in InfoSum
Use InfoSum Platform and tools available to enable data collaboration. Build segments on your first party data to get enriched insights or to activate them in your campaigns.
1. Generate your data exports from Piano
You will need to generate two different files from Piano:
- The Segments File, which contains the list of Piano IDs and the segments to which the user belongs
- The Mapping File, which contains the list of the Piano IDs and the associated email.
Contact your Piano Account Manager to set up and validate the file generation process.
Segments File
- TSV files
- First column: Piano IDs
- Second column: multi-value column containing the list of the segments which the user belongs to separate by comma
- Sent on a regular basis (e.g. daily)
Mapping File
- CSV file
- Piano IDs + email + user information (eventually)
- To be extracted manually by the final user

2. Export the two files to the preferred cloud location
You need to set up an S3 bucket or an SFTP server to send your data from Piano to InfoSum.
Contact your Piano Account Manager to set up the push connection for the two export files to either the S3 or SFTP destination. You can choose the preferred method according to the technology you are using or have at your disposal.
Once the files are pushed, you will be able to use the relative connector to upload them into InfoSum easily.
3a. Create the two Bunkers
You must create two Bunkers, one for each file exported from Piano. Create each dataset using the New Dataset button on the Dataset tab or use the plus sign shortcut in the top right which appears on every page throughout the Platform.
You are required to supply information on the following 4 sections:
- Size
- Location
- Type
- Details
Click here for more details on how to create a Bunker and how to import a dataset. Please ensure you select Standard as Import type and Insight as type.
The following sections describe in more detail how to import the two files into InfoSum.
3b. Import the Segments File into the correspondent Bunker
Once you have created the Bunker, you can connect to that Bunker and import your data. The Bunker automatically opens on the Dashboard tab. Next, select Import a dataset and select the connector you chose to use (S3 or SFTP).
See the following links for details on how to use a:
Follow these steps to import the Segments File:
- Select the source from where InfoSum will pull the data: S3 bucket or SFTP server.
- Connect to your source by entering the credentials required.
-
Download the file by selecting it from the list that appears.
At this step you must:
- Select Tab as field delimiter.
-
After clicking the Download button and then the Connect button, you will see the preview of the Segments File.
At this step you must:
- Go to Multi Value Delimiter and select Comma as field delimiter.
- Click on the toggle next to SEGMENT_IDS in the header row and enable the Multi value column by clicking on the slider associated and clicking Update.
Then accept the preview config.
-
Once you've accepted the preview configuration, you will need to assign a configuration to the dataset. Click on create a new config, a new table will be opened.
At this step you must:
- Use the slider to enable USER_ID as Key.
- Select both USER_ID and SEGMENT_IDS by clicking the box next to the name.
Then accept the wizard settings.
-
If you are satisfied with the results and no alert appears on the table shown in the Normalize step, click on the Normalize button and then Publish the dataset.
3b. Import the Mapping File into the correspondent Bunker
Once you have created the Bunker, you can connect to that Bunker and import your data. The Bunker automatically opens on the Dashboard tab. Next, select Import a dataset and select the connector you chose to use (S3 or SFTP).
See the following links for details on how to use a:
Follow these steps to import the Mapping File:
- Select the source from where InfoSum will pull the data: S3 bucket or SFTP server.
- Connect to your source by entering the credentials required.
-
Download the file by selecting it from the list that appears.
At this step you must:
- Select Comma as the field delimiter.
-
After clicking the Download button and then the Connect button, you will see a preview of the Segment File.
At this step you do not need to modify anything. Click on Accept preview config.
-
Once you've accepted the preview configuration, you will need to assign a configuration to the dataset. Click on Create a new config, a new table will be opened.
At this step you must:
- Go to the Custom Categories tab.
- Use the slider to enable USER_ID as Key (please verify the USER_ID name is exactly the same as the name used in the Segments File. If not, modify the name.).
- Ensure that none of the names contain special characters (e.g “?”). In case you can modify the name field.
- Select all the category rows to confirm the creation of custom categories.
Then accept the wizard settings.
-
If you are satisfied with the results and no alert appears on the table shown in the Normalize step, click on the Normalize button and then Publish the dataset.
4. Connect the two datasets and start to collaborate with your data
There are different ways you can start collaboration using InfoSum. Once you have uploaded Piano’s files they are at your disposal inside the Platform and you can use all the tools available.
You can use the Audience Builder and the Segment Builder to create the segment you want to target in your campaigns based on enriched insights or to get useful insights on.
You can use the Connections List or the Connections Grid to evaluate the overlap between your datasets/audience/segments and your partner's to better plan your media activities.
Connect with your InfoSum Customer Success Manager to define together the best way to connect your data according to the use case you want to implement. |
Here is one example of the way to connect and collaborate with your Piano datasets:
- Connect your Piano datasets by creating an audience using the Audience Builder. You can also choose to connect them directly with other datasets you can use to collaborate, as shown in the example screenshot:
- Build a segment by filtering the audience by category and attribute-based criteria. For example, you can use Piano’s Segment ID to recreate the segment in InfoSum to get useful insights thanks to collaboration with other parties (such as data providers, customer intelligence providers, brands, publishers, etc).
